1. Who We Are
Mise is a personal pantry management application. References to "we", "us", or "our" in this policy refer to the Mise development team. "You" refers to the person using the app.
2. What Data We Collect
Mise collects the following information. Unless noted otherwise below, this data is stored locally on your device:
- Profile information — your name and, optionally, your email address. These are entered during onboarding and used only to personalise your in-app experience. Your email is never used for marketing.
- Pantry data — ingredient names, quantities, storage locations, and expiry dates that you add manually, via barcode scan, or via receipt scan.
- Custom ingredients — any item names you type or scan that aren't already in Mise's built-in ingredient library, saved so they're recognised consistently across the app.
- Shopping list — items and quantities you add to your shopping list, and any preferred stores you save.
- Meal plans and recipes — meals you create or plan, and any recipes you import from a web link.
- Dietary preferences — any dietary restrictions or preferences you select (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free).
- Taste profile — ingredient ratings you provide to help personalise recipe suggestions.
- App settings — your notification and shopping list preferences.
- Feedback you submit — if you use the in-app "Send feedback" form, the message you write (and your email, if you choose to provide one) is sent to our error-reporting service. See Section 9.
3. How We Use Your Data
Your data is used exclusively to operate the features of the app:
- Displaying and managing your pantry, shopping list, and meal plan
- Sending local push notifications about expiring items and shopping reminders (if enabled)
- Matching scanned barcodes and receipt text to identify products
- Extracting ingredients and instructions from a recipe link you paste in
- Personalising recipe suggestions based on your dietary preferences and taste profile
- Showing your name and profile within the app
- Diagnosing crashes and responding to feedback you choose to send us
We do not use your data for advertising or profiling, and we do not sell your data.
4. Where Your Data Is Stored
The large majority of Mise's data — your pantry, shopping list, meal plans, and settings — is stored locally on your device using your device's secure storage. We do not operate servers that store this data.
A small number of specific features do send data to third-party services in order to work — barcode lookups, recipe imports, and crash/feedback reporting. Each is described in Sections 5, 6, and 9 below, so you know exactly what leaves your device and why.
You can delete all locally stored data at any time by going to Settings → Danger Zone → Reset App. Uninstalling the app will also remove all locally stored data.
5. Camera, Photos & Barcode Scanning
Mise uses your device's camera for two features: scanning grocery receipts and scanning product barcodes.
- Receipt scanning — photos of receipts are processed entirely on your device using on-device text recognition. The photo itself is never uploaded or sent anywhere; only the resulting text stays on your device to be matched against your pantry or shopping list.
- Barcode scanning — when you scan a product barcode, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts, a free, open, non-commercial product database, to look up the product's name. No image or photo is sent — only the barcode number itself. If you've scanned that exact barcode before, Mise uses its saved result instead of looking it up again.
6. Recipe Import From Web Links
When you paste a web link to import a recipe, Mise fetches the content of that page in order to read the recipe's ingredients and instructions. This means the URL you provide, and the request to load it, is sent out from your device to that website — the same as if you'd opened the link in a browser. No other personal data is included in that request.
7. AI Features
Mise is building AI-powered features including recipe recommendations and pantry analysis. When these features are enabled, ingredient and preference data may be sent to a third-party AI provider (such as Anthropic) solely to generate a response. This data is used only to fulfil your request and is not retained or used to train AI models.
AI features will be clearly labelled within the app and will require explicit interaction to activate. You will not be opted in automatically.
8. Push Notifications
Mise uses local push notifications to remind you about expiring pantry items and upcoming shopping days. These notifications are generated entirely on your device — no notification data is sent to external servers. You can disable notifications at any time in Settings or through your device's notification settings.
9. Third-Party Services
Mise integrates a small number of third-party services, each limited to a specific purpose:
- Open Food Facts — used only to look up product names from scanned barcodes, as described in Section 5. We do not share any other data with this service.
- Sentry (error and crash reporting) — if Mise crashes or encounters an error, technical details about what went wrong (such as the type of error and which part of the app it occurred in) are sent to Sentry to help us fix it. This is configured to exclude personal identifiers like your device's IP address or advertising ID. If you use the in-app "Send feedback" form, your message and optional email are also sent through this same service so we can review it.
We do not use advertising or tracking services, and no data is shared with any service for marketing purposes.
10. Children's Privacy
Mise is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can address this.
11. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the data stored by Mise (visible within the app at all times)
- Correct any data by editing your profile, pantry, or meal entries
- Delete all locally stored data using the Reset App function in Settings
- Request deletion of any crash reports or feedback you've submitted, by contacting us as described in Section 13 — note that Reset App only clears data stored on your device, not anything already sent to Sentry
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you within the app. Continued use of Mise after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
13. Contact
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how your data is handled, please reach out through the contact information provided in the app's listing on the App Store or Google Play, or through the in-app feedback form in Settings.
